TEACHING ENGLISH IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY:

CHALLENGES AND DIRECTIONS

27-28 February 2011

at

G. Narayanamma Institute of Technology and Science

Shaikpet, Hyderabad

It is now a cliché to say that English is a global language and that it is a required skill in this globalised world. However, the challenges facing the English teacher are many in the twenty-first century. On the one hand, the old issues such as regional medium background students being in the classroom remain, and on the other hand, there is a whole new generation that is immensely techno-savvy. In this context of old problems co-existing with new, how does the English teacher manage to teach so that students are equipped with the necessary skills for their academic pursuits as well as for their occupational and other interactive purposes?

The aim of this seminar is to address some of the issues that the new century has brought to the fore, with papers on all aspects related to the overall theme. Papers may be on any of the following questions:

    • What is the relevance of English in educational institutions that are heavily focused on specific disciplines?
    • What type of materials are we to use in the classroom?
    • What techniques are more useful and relevant?
    • What changes do we notice in learner behaviour and how do we
    • address them?
    • Which aspects of language need attention? And in which context?

Papers addressing any of the issues above or any other topic related to the overall theme of the seminar are invited. Papers may also report some successful (or unsuccessful) classroom experiments.

Papers are invited from all teachers and research scholars residing in Andhra Pradesh.

Abstracts of not more than 500 words may be sent to the organizing committee to the following email address: eltaihyd@yahoo.com
