It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism at Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad is organizing a two-day International Conference - Muslims, Democracy and the Media: Challenges and Prospects on 17^th & 18^th March 2015.

 

Concept note:

While multiculturalism has contributed to a unique Indian experience that makes India a tapestry of harmony this experience has not been without its challenges. The conference is an attempt to assess these challenges. The media has the potential to influence community perceptions, and the objective of the conference is to provide a platform for a meaningful dialogue to take place between scholars, academicians, researchers, media personnel, policy makers, and opinion shapers, social activists, appraising each other with views, observations and analyses of the scenario. It is hoped that the conference will lead to the beginning of a dialogue between the media and marginalized group/s.

Broad Themes of the Conference

The conference proposes to address the following broad themes:

1.     Minorities, Muslims and the Media:

·         Muslims, Ethnic Media and the Problems of Marketing and Advertising.

·         Muslims and Popular Cinema

·         Muslims and Popular Television

·         Muslims and the Urdu TV Channels: Adequacies and Inadequacies

·         Challenges for Ethnic/Regional Media

·         Muslims and the lack of corporatization of Ethnic Media

·         Urdu Media and Secularism

·         Muslims and International Media

 

2.     Politics in Media and Media in Politics

·         Muslims, Communalism and Indian Media

·         Muslims, Urdu media and 'Muslim' politics

·         Muslims, Secular Democracy and the Media

IITM Summer Fellowship Programme - 2015

The IITM - Summer Fellowship Programme of two months with stipend is designed to enhance awareness and interest in high quality academic research among young Engineering, Management, Sciences and Humanities students through a goal oriented summer mini-project undertaken at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

Eligibility:Candidates pursuing third year of B.E./B.Tech./B.Sc. (Engg)/Integrated M.E./M.Tech. programme, first year of ME/M.Tech/M.Sc./M.A, MBA with outstanding academic background in terms of high ranks in university examinations are encouraged to apply, highlighting their academic performance and achievement including papers presented at seminars, projects executed, design contests participated, score/rank in Mathematics Olympiad and any other awards/distinctions obtained. [IIT students are not eligible to apply].

Period of the Project: Duration of the programme may commence from 16th May 2015 to 15th July 2015. (Schedule may be flexible to suit student's convenience.)

Stipend: A sum of Rs.5000/- per month will be given as a stipend for a maximum period of 2 months.
