Adieu, Prof. Tutun Mukherjee: Tribute to a Shining Scholar and a Great Mentor

Prof. Tutun Mukherjee, former Professor and Director at the Centre for Comparative Literature, University of Hyderabad, India, as well as a Joint Professor at the Centre for Women's Studies and Department of Theatre Arts, University of Hyderabad, has left us on January 07, at the age of 68. She is survived by her two children and husband.

A distinguished scholar of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies, and an engaging teacher and a great mentor, Prof. Tutun Mukherjee taught at the University of Hyderabad and Osmania University for many years. Her primary research focused on Literary Criticism and Theory, World Literatures, Comparative Literature, Women's Writing, Translation Theory, Theatre and Film Studies. She worked extensively on these areas besides contributing a significant number of journal articles and book chapters with publishers of national and international repute. She jointly edited a volume titled, Companion to Comparative Literature, World Literatures, and Comparative Cultural Studies, with Steven Totosy de Zepetnek, published in 2014. This work attempted to bring together the current international scholarship in these three major areas of knowledge in Humanities. Her other works  include - I. A. Richards and New Criticism (1990), The Chicago Critics: An Evaluation (1992), Translation: From Periphery To Centrestage (1998), Girish Karnad's Plays: Performance and Critical Perspectives (2006), The Plays of Mahesh Dattani (2012), Staging Resistance: Plays by Women in Translation (2012); and Androgyny and Female Impersonation in India: Nari Bhav (2016) with Niladri R. Chatterjee. She was also on the editorial team of numerous national and international journals. Under her supervision, a mega project of EPG Pathshala - English has been completed recently.

Prof. Tutun Mukherjee extensively translated from Bangla into English. She was engaged in compiling a translated volume of Dalit literature from Eastern India, the volume is yet to be published. She worked till last day of her life before being admitted to the hospital. A volume on Indian Epics is the last complete work which she prepared for publishing. Two volumes on Gender and Culture and Gender and Development will be published soon.

She played a pivotal role in advancing the discipline of Comparative Literature as the Head of the Centre for Comparative Literature, University of Hyderabad - to enhance the study of Comparative Literature in a multilingual context she introduced MA programme in Comparative Literature. Apart from formal academic activities she introduced many academic initiatives for engaging students and scholars with new dialogues such as - Researchers' at Work Conference (RAW.CON) which in her own words is "a conference organised by the students, for academic engagement of the students, researchers and early career researchers." She was a keen observer and always came up with suggestions to promote a peer-centric learning process. Introduction of regular meeting for researchers to share their work, organising students' panels for conference participation - Prof. Mukherjee was always proactive in such initiatives. She accepted several challenges to enhance and extend the significance and meaning of Comparative Literature in the Indian context. In addition to her intellectual rigour, Prof. Tutun Mukherjee's legacy also included introducing Translation Studies as a discipline in the Centre for Comparative Literature which she built up with exceptional scholarship and utmost dedication.

Prof. Tutun Mukherjee will always be remembered as a teacher with a smiling face, immense energy and dedication. She was a teacher with multiple qualities to be followed by anyone in academic life. She served in many administrative positions while refusing many attractive academic positions. Her uncompromising nature, vision made her a natural leader among her colleagues. She never believed that she has been suffering from any ailment. She was very happy to find that almost all the students whom she supervised are established in the academic world.

She was and will always remain a source of inspiration for innumerable students pursuing Comparative Literature and Translation Studies in India and abroad. Her passing away is an irreparable loss for the Indian academia. She has left behind a legacy of critical thinking and it is the responsibility of the present scholars to carry it forward, and to delve deeper into the discipline. The entire academic community pays homage to one of the most intellectual and diligent minds of our time.

9/11 and the Beginning of the End of Liberal Democracy: Fictional Perspectives; International Conference at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India

9/11 and the Beginning of the End of Liberal Democracy: Fictional Perspectives

International Conference

Centre of Advanced Study in English

Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India

 27-28 February 2018

The conference hopes to bring together original research papers on the images of Islam and Muslims post 9/11 in literary texts and media discourses and engage meaningfully with Islam as a human and historical phenomenon where Muslims are neither victims nor threats  but active participants within modern liberal structures of societies that are themselves ready to shift from an 'an uncritical acceptance of the category of religion' to a 'critical interrogation of religion as a category' to understand Islam.

Concept Note and Call for Papers

'Mankind's ideological evolution' seemed, for many, to have reached 'the end of history as such' in the worldwide triumph of liberal democracy and market capitalism - visually signified by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989- as the logical culmination of the Western civilization. This narrative was 'spectacularly' interrupted by the events of September 2001 which seemed to signal the beginning of the end of the utopia of liberal democracy where capitalism had 'broken free from the shackles of democracy'. The ensuing 'global war on terror' may be justified by 'the state of exception' but not all in the 'West' or in the 'Muslim world' (both conceptual rather than territorial categories that are not monolithic) endorse or wish to be involved in this war. This fact-of-the-matter however gets neutralized, if not lost, in the nuanced language games of fiction, written after the events of 9/11, and its own politics of words and images.

In the wake of an unprecedented scale of global violence and the spread of extremism by individuals and states, both in the 'West' as well as in the 'Muslim world', it becomes all the more disconcerting to realize that there are no 'visible enemies' that 'triumphant globalization' is fighting. Secularist triumphalism, the twin of triumphant globalization, which had rolled over traditional religious establishments, had been shaken by the Rushdie Affair in the late 1980s and the fundamentalist retaliations continuing till the early 2000s exposed not only the 'uncertainties and insecurities of Western societies about the worth of basic liberal values' (Malak) but also the distance Muslims had travelled away from the spirit and ethos of Islam. Far from being a liberating force, a kinetic social, cultural and intellectual dynamic for equality, justice and human values, Islam on 9/11 seemed to have internalized what the false Western representations had done to demonize it for centuries. (Sardar). The phenomenon of the 'resurgence of religion' cannot be seen separately from the hegemonic understanding of religion in the narrow and closed discourse of secularism. In the resultant 'clash of fundamentalisms', of Western secularism and Islamism, Baudrillard's contention that the enemy, in the form of Islamic terrorism, could not in any meaningful way be regarded as an alien phenomenon coming from outside but from within the unchallenged triumphalism of a distorted logic of 'civilization', though controversial may not be entirely unfounded. It rises from a deep sense of concern for a globalization that as it  grew more and more powerful, so did its cultural and spiritual crisis.

'Provoked', as it were, by some of these concerns and the sense that 'the existing conceptualizations of Islam have in various ways failed to convey the fullness of the reality of what it is that has actually been (and is) going on in the historical societies of Muslims living as Muslims' (Shahab Ahmad) this conference hopes to bring together original research papers on the images of Islam and Muslims post 9/11 in literary texts and media discourses and engage meaningfully with Islam as a human and historical phenomenon where Muslims are neither victims nor threats  but active participants within modern liberal structures of societies that are themselves ready to shift from an 'an uncritical acceptance of the category of religion' to a 'critical interrogation of religion as a category' to understand Islam. With some of these intended aims we invite original papers of 30 minutes duration.

Sub themes may include but are not restricted to:

Islam, Islamism and Secularization

Politics or Policing of Recognition in Liberal Democratic Societies

The 'Representability' of Islamic Fundamentalism

The 'Rushdie Affair' and the Post 9/11 Novel

Post-colonialism and the Migrant Muslim Writing

The 'Resurgence of Religion' and the Neo-colonial Reality

The War on Terror and the Global State of Exception

Contemporary British Muslim Fiction

Multiculturalism and Neo-oriental Narratives

Globalization, the End of History and Prophetic Religions

Holy War in the Media

Abstracts of about 500 words, with a 50-word note on the speaker, must be emailed to Dr. Rafat Ali <asdak.yunzi@gmail.com> before 15 January 2017. Out-of-town delegates will be notified as soon as possible, to expedite the process of travel bookings. We regret that we cannot offer reimbursement for travel and accommodation, but we could assist delegates in making arrangements for accommodation, if required.

National Conference on “Frames of Marginality: Interpreting and Interrogating Theory and Praxis”

Department of English

Raja Peary Mohan College

Uttarpara, Hooghly, West Bengal, India

&

Department of English

Pandit Raghunath Murmu Smriti Mahavidyalaya

Jamboni, Bankura, West Bengal, India

National Conference on

"Frames of Marginality: Interpreting and Interrogating Theory and Praxis"

21-22 February, 2018 (Tentative)

Many scholars and academics in the Western World regard Postcolonialism as passé and emphatically opine in favour of its replacement by Globalisation. What, however, very significant is that this emphatic proclamation itself is the Colonialists' articulations to instress their ideas/opinions/assumptions/concepts in the mindset of the so-called 'Other World'. The fact that the centre – margin issues (which stem from this discourse) have still been in vogue, have still their sway, at least over the 'Other World' can hardly be negated. Although Postcolonialism can be seen as back-burner, as a political process, it continues to confront other developments like neocolonialism that lead to larger peripheries and marginalizations. On the other hand, Globalisation has receded after revealing more raptures and has actually strengthened inequality.

Further, the questions/debates of local/margin redefine our locations. It will be interesting to look at how our perspectives regarding internal marginalizations, as opposed to the Global, could evolve further, through such understandings. In the context of the 'Other World' various discourses/histories, politics, contexts, and interpretations - the centre and margin also involve social concepts like caste, class, gender, religion, language, race, ethnicity, culture and so on. The Conference Committee, therefore, thinks it pertinent to organize a National Conference on this umbrella concept of 'Marginality' and invites participants from all relevant academic disciplines.

NATIONAL YOUNG RESEARCHERS’ CONFERENCE ON VICTORIANA @ THE UNIVERSITY OF BURDWAN

NATIONAL YOUNG RESEARCHERS' CONFERENCE

ON

VICTORIANA

ORGANIZED BY

THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND CULTURE STUDIES (UGC SAP-DRS PHASE II),

THE UNIVERSITY OF BURDWAN

ON

14-15 SEPTEMBER 2017

The Department of English and Culture Studies, The University of Burdwan is going to organize its annual Young Researchers' Conference on 14-15 September, 2017 on the focal area of Victoriana.

Queen Victoria's regime in Britain, unlike any other preceding it, stood for paradigm shifts in what constituted Englishness within and without, in the world at large.  With imperial Britain ruling the waves, scientific-technological innovations abounding, and exponential industrial growth rate, Britain became something it had never been before and after this moment — a politico-economic superpower and the cultural capital of the world.

The cultural capital generated by long narrative poems, novels, polemical essays, children's fiction, crime narratives, life writings, women's writing, writings reproducing alternate sexualities, workers' narratives, mutiny novels, spiritual narratives, pornography, anthropological writings, juridical writings went hand in hand with extraordinary developments in material cultures.  These ranged from printing, publishing, archiving, painting, photography and restoration of art to postal reforms and development of postal material such as pens, writing pads, desks, police reforms, development of technology to detect the criminal, and use of technology to map worlds beyond logic.

The reverberations of these changes were felt around the world that Britain had colonized and had not colonized. We are all, in a certain sense, post-Victorian.

The Conference uses the term 'Victoriana' in its broadest possible sense, inviting papers from areas not only from that period but also from our times that consciously recycle and recast Victorian tropes, looking back and beyond at the same time.

Some of the focal areas could be:

·         Queen Victoria: Myth and Reality

·         Condition of England Question novel

·         Christian Socialism and the Victorian novel

·         Representations in Art, Restoration and Victoriana

·         Crime, Criminology, the Rise of Detective Fiction.

·         Uncanny, the Rise of Spiritualism, Ghost Clubs, Spirit Societies, Parapsychology, Spiritual Narratives

·         Narrative Poetry, Browning, Tennyson and so forth

·         The Narrativized Play, Shaw, Galsworthy, etc

·         Print Victoriana

·         Neo-Victorianism

·         Photography and Victoriana

·         Victoriana and Translation

·         Victoriana and Pedagogy

·         Victoriana and Pornography

·         Victoriana and India

·         Victoriana and Food

·         Victoriana and dress/sartorial specificities

·         The Mutiny Novel

·         Victoriana and Travel Narrative.

·         Children's Writing

·         Women in Victoriana

·         Alternative Sexuality and Victoriana

·         Postal Reforms and Victoriana

·         Colonial Modernity

We welcome young researchers (students, research scholars and young teachers) from different universities and institutions to the conference. They should send their abstracts (not more than 250 words) to the organizers, and, if selected, they will get 15 minutes for their presentations and 5 minutes for questions on their papers. Last date for receipt of abstracts is 24 July 2017. The abstracts will pass through a rigorous peer review process. Acceptance will be conveyed by 15 August 2017. Abstracts should be sent to the following email id:yrcenglishbu@gmail.com. The names, contact numbers, email ids, and affiliations of those sending abstracts should be clearly mentioned in the abstracts.

There will be no registration fee.

Venue: The University of Burdwan, Golapbag, East Burdwan – 713104. West Bengal.

Special attraction:

The participants may be taken to the Museum and Art Gallery in the premises of Rajbati, the palace of the Burdwan Raj donated to the University of Burdwan in 1960. The Victorian art objects, sculptures, architecture, and other such cultural documents related to the Burdwan Raj, whose history dates back to the 17th century, would be of interest to the researchers in the field of Victorian Studies and also those interested in exploring India's colonial modernity.  To know more about the Museum and Art Gallery, please visit the website:http://www.buruniv.ac.in/campus/museum
